About
Winchelsea is a planned medieval new town built in the 13th century on a grid pattern, now reduced to a quiet village with remarkable medieval buildings. Three original gateways survive from the town walls, while St Thomas's Church preserves beautiful medieval tombs and stonework. The town sits on a hill overlooking Romney Marsh and Rye Bay, having been relocated from Old Winchelsea which was destroyed by storms. Peaceful streets and unspoiled character make it one of Sussex's hidden gems.
