Wells-next-the-Sea retains the working character of a genuine Norfolk port, with fishing boats and coastal traders still using the attractive harbour lined with colourful houses. A narrow-gauge railway runs from the quay to the beach, a mile away across salt marshes teeming with birdlife. The town's Georgian buildings, independent shops, and excellent fish and chip shops create an authentic seaside atmosphere without theme park tourism.
