Sandwich is the best-preserved of the original Cinque Ports, its medieval street pattern and ancient buildings remarkably intact. Three medieval gates still guard entrances to the town, while the Guildhall and St Peter's Church showcase centuries of history. The River Stour once made Sandwich a major port, though silting has left it two miles from the sea. The town's position near Royal St George's golf course brings an international golfing connection, while numerous tea rooms and antique shops provide gentler pleasures.
