About
Rutland Water is one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, created in the 1970s and now a haven for wildlife and outdoor activities. The reservoir attracts huge numbers of waterfowl, with birdwatching hides positioned around the shore and the Lyndon Nature Reserve on the western arm. A 25-mile traffic-free cycling route circles the water, while sailing, windsurfing, and fishing are popular activities. Normanton Church, standing on a peninsula and saved from the rising waters, is now a museum. Nearby market towns of Oakham and Uppingham offer shopping and dining.
