Melrose is a delightful small town in the Scottish Borders, dominated by the romantic ruins of Melrose Abbey, one of Scotland's finest medieval monasteries and burial place of Robert the Bruce's heart. Sir Walter Scott lived nearby at Abbotsford House, his home now a fascinating museum exploring his life and enormous influence on Scottish culture and tourism. The town sits beside the River Tweed with the distinctive three peaks of the Eildon Hills rising behind, offering excellent walking including a section of the Southern Upland Way. Independent shops and traditional pubs maintain a welcoming character.
