About
Knaresborough is one of Yorkshire's most picturesque towns, perched on cliffs above a dramatic gorge carved by the River Nidd. A medieval castle ruins crown the cliff, while the railway viaduct strides across the gorge creating a spectacular townscape. Mother Shipton's Cave, England's oldest visitor attraction, has drawn tourists since 1630 to see the petrifying well where objects turn to stone. The riverside walk leads to the Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag, hewn from solid rock in 1408, and boat trips explore the gorge from a different perspective.
