Grasmere is forever associated with William Wordsworth, who lived at Dove Cottage from 1799 to 1808 and described the area as "the loveliest spot that man hath ever found." The poet is buried in St Oswald's churchyard alongside his family, while Dove Cottage is now a museum exploring his life and work. The village sits beside the beautiful lake of the same name, surrounded by high fells including Helm Crag. The famous Grasmere Gingerbread, made to a secret recipe since 1854, is sold from a tiny shop beside the church.
