Ballater is an attractive Highland village on Royal Deeside, closely associated with the royal family who spend summers at nearby Balmoral Castle. The village developed as a spa resort in Victorian times, retaining elegant granite buildings and a refined atmosphere. Royal warrants adorn many shop fronts, while traditional Highland games are held each August. The village serves as an excellent base for walking in the Cairngorms National Park, with Lochnagar rising to the south and beautiful scenery in all directions along the River Dee valley.
